My favourite inspirational quotes

Dear reader,

If you don’t know, I have a thing for quotes. Always had. As I have a great memory I tend to memorise as many as I can and it keeps me going. I even wrote down some on post-its and put them on my mirror to never forget some words. It always makes me happy to reread my favourite quotes and also makes me realise how powerful words are. That’s why I always share one whenever I post on Instagram – I love how words can make us feel better.

As quotes inspire me every day, I decided to share ten of my favourite ones – the ones which keep me motivated and help me on a daily basis when it comes to my mental health.

 Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This quote has been on my mirror ever since I saw this movie. Every time I feel bad, I look at it and try to believe in what Leia said. It’s really important for me to be able to realise that it’s not only because I feel bad now that I’ll feel bad forever.

 Renegades, Marissa Meyer

I have already told and told again that this book has been one of my favourites of 2018, and it’s also mostly because of this quote. With my anxiety and OCD it is so easy to start thinking that I am afraid of everything, and somehow I am. However I know that I can’t let my fears rule my life and I also now know that everyone is afraid, being brave just means still doing the things you’re scared of.

 A Monster Calls, Patrick Ness

I can’t express properly how many times I have hated myself because of things I thought. Living with OCD also means living with awful thoughts, visions of you hurting others and more, and you can quickly start to think that you are a monster. When I first read this quote, I had to stop for a second to fully appreciate it. It’s nice to hear someone saying that what you think doesn’t really  matter, it’s what you do that does.

 Ruin and Rising, Leigh Bardugo

When I read this quote, I remember having to put down the book and immediatly writing it down. It suddenly made me feel so strong and powerful, exactly what I needed and what I still need today. Those words hold so much power within them and everytime I read it I can feel it going through me.

 Lord of Shadows, Cassandra Clare

I love this quote for the same reason I love the one from Renegades, but also because it has a different meaning. It pushes me to appreciate my fears, to see them as something else, as a strength even. I am afraid of a lot of things but it also says a lot about me and who I am, what I love and value. It makes me who I am and shows me what I care about.

The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas

If I had a dollar every time I told my best friend that I’ve been trying my best but things still went wrong, I’ll probably be rich by now. It’s very important for me to remind myself that as long as I am always trying to do everything right then it’s okay. I can’t blame myself for every little things that go wrong in my life.

A Darker Shade of Magic, V.E. Schwab

Lila Bard is by far the character who inspires me the most with Emma Carstairs. Her words are always with me, pushing me to do more and to always try to face my fears and reach the impossible.

A Conjuring of Light, V.E. Schwab

Did I ever tell you that V.E. Schwab is one of my favourite authors? Well, now you know. I have two scars on my left arm and they’re quite big. I used to be so ashamed of them but also of my “inner” scars. Now thanks to this quote I try to be proud of them and to accept that they are a part of my story, that I can make it a strength if I want it to. Despite all the scars I have, I am still here and I am still going strong.

 Emergency Contact, Mary H.K. Choi

This book has also been one of my favourites of 2018 and it meant a lot to me. This quote has been with me ever since I read it. It reminds me that I am the only one who can decide of my future and what I make of it. I can suffer all I want, at the end of the day I’m the only one who can try to make a change and be more than my mental health.

 Crooked Kingdom, Leigh Bardugo

He thumbed quickly through the ledger and said, “When people see a cripple walking down the street, leaning on his cane, what do they feel?” Wylan looked away. People always did when Kaz talked about his limp, as if he didn’t know what he was or how the world saw him. “They feel pity. Now, what do they think when they see me coming?”

Wylan’s mouth quirked up at the corner. “They think they’d better cross the street.”

Kaz tossed the ledger back in the safe. “You’re not weak because you can’t read. You’re weak because you’re afraid of people seeing your weakness. You’re letting shame decide who you are. Help me with the painting.”

This one was too long to be added in a picture but it’s one that means a lot to me. I couldn’t even find it online and had to look into my book to find it again. I don’t know why nobody talks about this moment between Kaz and Wylan but it really was an important one for me. As Kaz says, he could be seen as weak but does not let his weaknesses define him. He knows he’s stronger than his cane and that nobody will see him as weak as long as he doesn’t feel like it. He’s a true inspiration for that.

Well, here we are! I hope those words inspired you at least a bit and that you maybe find some new favourite quotes.

Share with us some of your favourite inspiration quotes or some that have helped you in the past! My favourite one still has to be “Don’t let the muggles get you down” by J.K. Rowling but I wanted to add some more recent favourites.

Love always,

Clara

  1. I’ve just watched “The edge of love” and I wrote down a quote from it just a moment ago, I thought it would be the perfect time to share it : “It’s mine, isn’t it? What you write.
    – All my words and every hearbeat. They’re all for you.”

Anyway, I have a passion for quotes as well and the one you share here are beautiful!

  2. Lila Bard inspires me a lot too! I’ve just finished reading the series this month but I’ve already tried to step out of my comfort zone because of her. I also loved when Newt said, ‘My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.’ in Fantastic Beasts. I wrote the quote on a piece of paper and stuck it on the shelf on my desk.

  3. I love quotes and reading them so much, but I am doing a very poor job of keeping track of them all, that’s something I really should do at some point. These quotes are fantastic, I especially love the Schwab ones, as well as the one from Emergency Contact, I loved this book SO much ❤

  5. Quotes are really important to me, and help me so much. I really love the Renegades, Lord of Shadows and Crooked Kingdom ones, but my favorite is still ” words have the power to change us”. It’s so meanful to me, and true, because words really changed me, and helped me feel better.

    Otherwise, great post Clara !

  6. I love quotes and I love this post! I’ve started collecting some of my favorites in my bookstagram captions, but I want to start a notebook this summer as well. My favorite on this list is the quote from Emergency Contact. “To be a hero, you had to decide it was you.” This summer especially, I have been striving to do things that make me feel fulfilled and refreshed– because when it comes to confidence or tackling things, others can help, but you must have strong belief in yourself. Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. Thank you so much, and I’m so glad we share our love for quotes!
It’s exactly why I love this quote so much! Honestly if you don’t decide to get up in the morning and do your best, then no one will be able to do it for you. We are all our own heroes of our narratives and no one other than us have so much power on our lives!
