Through the year I spent on Instagram, many people have been curious to know how I started reading in English even though I was French. Today, I am going to tell you my story before giving you some tips so you can start reading in another language as well. The last part of this blog post will be in French: I will give some tips to all my French visitors on how to start reading in English specifically and some recommendations to start with.
You may not know but I do not watch a lot of movies or tv shows. I want to but I have this small problem: I can’t usually focus for more than 30/40 minutes. I tend to get easily distracted, can’t take what I’m watching seriously anymore and do something else next to it. (My friends hate me for this.) However, I decided to change all of this in 2018.
I realised that going to the movies, in this big dark room without any signal, allows me to actually watch the film without saying much. I don’t get as distracted as I use to and I somehow fell in love with the idea of going out to see something on the big screen. That is why I decided to get myself an unlimited movie card, which allows me to go see any movies I want for a small price (as long as I see at least two movies per month). And because I did that, I started to list down all the movies I saw, as I realised that I couldn’t remember anything I saw in 2017 at all.
So here is why I will start talking about movies (and tv shows, as I tend to watch some episodes every night to help me fall asleep) on this blog.
From #1 New York Times-bestselling author Marissa Meyer, comes a high-stakes world of adventure, passion, danger, and betrayal.
Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.
The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies–humans with extraordinary abilities–who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.
Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice–and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.
So many things happened and I grew a lot. As I said in another blog post, 2017 has been a very challenging year for me and I have been feeling terrible most of the time. As we are now in February, I can say that starting a new year has done a lot for me: I am trying to feel better and it is working.
I did a lot, started some of my goals, which I will talk about in another blog post soon, and for now it seems to work. I also started reading a lot again and I’m very happy to see that reading at least 10 books per month became “normal” to me – it’s now my own pace and I love it.
So here is what I read in January and what has been important to me!
2017 has been a rollercoaster and as I already talked about my mental health and state of mind, which were very sad, I decided to highlight all the good things that have happened during this year. This may be a useless blog post but it was important for me to focus on the good, so… here we go.
I never thought I’ll have to explain myself about it, but I think it is important for me to do it today.
If you don’t know, I am French. Yet, I speak in English on every social media I have and read English books in English. At first, it was the French community who was judging me: Are you doing this to attract more people on your accounts? Are you doing this for fame? Are you ashamed of being French? Do you think it makes you look cool? Why don’t you translate your English captions in French as well? Etc.
Those questions came back all the time. I once did a livestream and some French people came to ask me why I was still talking in English. As I am trying to spread positivity and kindness, and as I knew they weren’t trying to be mean or anything, I answered calmly and in a nice way.
I am writing to you because, on this day, I am crying for the very first time of 2018. I have been feeling happy for two weeks and now, all I can feel is emptiness and tiredness. Maybe it’s because I am not feeling well that I can write this letter, or maybe it’s simply because tonight I am inspired – anyway, I needed to go back to my year and see what truly happened.
