Dear reader,

Now that I am officially back on my blog I can talk again about mental health and everything that is related to it. Today I wanted to talk about something that has been asked to me a lot on Instagram: how to cope with a bad day.

All the tips I will be giving in this blog post can’t work for everyone and my list won’t be exhaustive. Those are just some tips I usually give to people when they had a bad day, but you can’t believe it’ll work every time.

Anyway, let’s get through some of my tips for coping with a bad day.

When you just had a bad day, it can be hard to aknowledge it and letting ourselves feeling it. One of the things that have helped me the most those past few years was the famous quote, “It’s okay not to be okay“. So whenever you are feeling down take a moment to breathe and let yourself cry even. It can really work on you and make you feel better. What I would also recommend no matter what is to reach for help and to talk to someone you can trust. Now I know that not everyone has the chance to have someone close enough to understand you, but if you do please reach to them and talk about what’s wrong.

Now I separated this blog post in three parts, which are mini guides to help you feel better depending on your personality and what you are looking for when you just had a bad day. I hope it’ll be useful!ย ๐Ÿ–ค

โฅ If you are looking for peace and quiet

If you are the type of person who needs everything to be quiet and calm after you had a bad day, then you should definitely start fresh by turning off your phone, taking a shower, wash your face and go to bed with a good book. Feeling clean always helps me to see things better and switching my phone to a book usually eases my mind, allowing my eyes to rest a little.

What I would recommend you to do as well is to grab a notebook and either write down what’s bothering you or what went well today, or even both. Taking some time to reflect on your day can really help you calmed down and make you realise that things are still looking bright.

The 5 steps guide:

  • Take a shower and wash your faceย ๐Ÿšฟ
  • Stay away from your phone
  • Grab a bookย ๐Ÿ“š
  • Write down what’s bothering you
  • Write down what went well todayย ๐Ÿ–‹

โฅ If you need to move to get better

If you are someone who needs to stay in movement, then I would first recommend to treat yourself: bake a cake, eat something you like, go buy yourself a book. Anything, as long as it makes you happy. I would then recommend to spend time with your family or with a friend, if you do live with your family or can go see someone.

If not and you are alone, please take some time to have an “emergency dance party”, as described in one of my favourite novel, Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. Having an “emergency dance party” means putting music and forcing yourself to dance until you start feeling better. I tried it a few times and I have to say that it worked on me! I would also recommend to exercice or to do something creative, like drawing, writing, paiting, coloring, or anything that works for you.

The 5 steps guide:

  • Treat yourselfย ๐ŸŒž
  • Spend time with your loved ones
  • Have an emergency dance partyย ๐ŸŽค
  • Exercice
  • Do something creativeย ๐Ÿ–

โฅ If you are easily inspired by the aesthetic around you

Now if you are the type of person who can easily be inspired by anything around you, I would highly recommend to start by listening to some music. It can be any kind as long as it keeps your mind off what happened badly today. While doing it you can always open Pinterest and browse through it, looking at pictures which would make you feel better. Personally I always look at pictures of cities under the rain – it works wonders on me.

What I would also recommend is to clean your room, maybe try some DIY as long as it’s simple and quick, before finally sitting down. You can either put on Netflix to watch some comedy shows or switch to YouTube to watch anything uplifting. I usually watch any Kalyn Nicholson’s videos to help me calm down.

And here you go! I hope this blog post can help you if you ever feel down. Please know that you can always contact me on here or on Instagram if you need anything and if you need to talk to someone.

  1. This is such a great post, Clara, thank you so, so very much for taking the time to put this together. Definitely will try to remember these things when I’m feeling down. Thank you โค โค

  2. Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.

I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this.
Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and
I look forward to your new updates.

  3. Thank you for all these tips, Clara, I will definitely follow some of them next time I need it! We all feel different on a bad day, so it is wise and comforting to see different ways to cope with it depending on our personality, thank you for thinking about it ๐Ÿ™‚ I am more of the quiet and peaceful type and it is true writing down what’s bothering me is always relieving. What I also do, not necessarily on a bad day, is that I try for each month to write a line per day about what I learnt from the day or what made me happy, so when I am feeling down, I can reread this little list of happy things and it often works on me, and makes me feel better:)

    lots of love to you!

    Lina xx

  4. When I’m sad or feeling anxious, the best thing that work for me is to watch a funny (really funny) movie. It’s like laughing makes me forget all the sadness in me and make me feel better almost instantly. Writing down emotions is also a great advice!
